I thought his reactions were perfectly natural, from how Hideo killed Taylor to how his interaction with “digital” little Sasuke went down. Well, Hideo did see the consequences of the algorithm first-hand in the Flash-vs.-The-Thinker-reminiscent omniscient battle in Zero’s mind. No, she understood why he did it – and she was upset about it throughout, telling Hideo that she didn’t agree with it, and not just saying something along the lines of “We’ll figure it out”.

Emika didn’t stop idealizing Hideo because of what he did about the algorithm, how he did it to avenge his lost brother and find his kidnappers. I appreciated Marie Lu’s take on forgiveness. I’ve read many books where the betrayal was real and the dynamic between a pair of characters didn’t change – rather became more animalistic. One central conflict in Wildcard the state of Emiko and Hideo’s relationship. The plot twists leading to the endgame were divine! Even the fact that we didn’t get to see a full game of Warcross didn’t bother me so much because of the sheer focus on figuring out Zero/Sasuke and the Blackcoats, and deciding what to do with Hideo. Easter eggs will be peppered throughout the pages, but it’s up to the reader to know to look for such clues. The plot flowed well for me I didn’t think it was slow at all. But Marie Lu’s integrative world of colours and points makes me wish we had this technology in real life, because how cool would that freaking be?! The only thing that pushed this book back for me is the realistic representations of investigations, court proceedings, the way companies actually work – it just seemed a little surreal to me. Heck, I barely even know how to win a race of Mario Kart. But I fell in love with the characters and the world all over again. I don’t know why I was ever so worried about this book! Maybe because of other reviews posting caution. But, with the help of the Phoenix Riders and some other unlikely allies, Emika realizes just how dangerous the Blackcoats’ intentions can be. Betrayed by someone she thought she trusted, Emika promises her services to Zero and his crew, the Blackcoats.
